ANTIETAM’S HILL lyrics:

They sent a man to do the devil’s work
But the job is never done
I’ve got a mark for ever soul I’ve stolen with my gun
From the beginning man has had his hand on the trigger of a gun
It’s either be a slave or it’s in my grave and I’m not the only one

And the cannons roar what an awful sound
Another flag goes up another man falls down
I’m southern raise I believe all men are free
So I’ll fight this fight till death comes for me
I’ve fought so long in Lincoln’s war for the peace God keep’s from me
I’ve wished so long to get back home to see my family
17 more miles to go till we reach that battlefield
Where men will die and loose there lives upon Antietam’s Hill

And the cannons roar what an awful sound
Another flag goes up another man falls down
I’m southern raised, I believe all men are free
So I’ll fight this fight till death comes for me

And the cannons roar what an awful sound
Another flag goes up another man falls down
I’m southern raised, I believe all men are free
So I’ll fight this fight till death comes for me

So I’ll fight this fight till death comes for me

Harlan County coming together to host Clean the Cumberland – Headwaters Hullabaloo

We are so proud to be a part of this event:

Clean the Cumberland – Headwaters Hullabaloo

When: Saturday, September 10

Time: 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Where: Harlan County Campground and RV Park, 8331 Hwy. 119, Putney, KY

Why: To cleanup and celebrate the headwaters of the Cumberland River!

Here is the official press release with a lot more information.  We hope to see you there!

The community of Harlan County, Kentucky is banding together to clean up the headwaters of the Cumberland River on Saturday, September 10, thanks to an innovative partnership among like-minded groups.

The event is being sponsored by Kentucky Waterways Alliance (KWA) as part of a contest that asked people across the state to nominate their favorite waterway to win a cleanup.  After a public voting contest, Cathryn Forester, of Harlan, KY, claimed the prize for the headwaters of the Cumberland River.

“Winning KWA’s contest gives our project exposure and financing that we never could have gotten on our own,” said Forester.  “I am thrilled to see stirrings of hope in our community because of this and I believe with all my heart that life-giving water can resurrect health, pride and even a thriving economy.”

Since 1993, KWA has been working across the state to carry out the mission of protecting and restoring Kentucky’s irreplaceable waterways. “We are excited to partner with Harlan County and other groups to help clean up the precious headwaters of the Cumberland River,” said Judy Petersen, KWA executive director.  “The health of our rivers is directly connected to the health of our communities and it’s inspiring to see the good people of this community come together to protect their local waterway.”

Other sponsors include Harlan Tourism, Harlan County Fiscal Court and their Outdoor Recreation Board Authority, River City Canoe and Kayak, Cumberland River bluegrass band, American Rivers, Eastern Kentucky Pride, Rooibee Red Tea, and Cumberland River Compact. They are joining forces to tackle 8 targeted areas along the Poor Fork of the river and to celebrate afterwards.

About 200 volunteers are needed to clean these areas and organize the event.  Participants will meet at Harlan County Campground in Putney, KY at 9am and be transported or directed to various areas along the river.  Seasoned paddlers are encouraged to bring their own canoes.  Supplies and food will be provided to volunteers throughout the day. To be involved, or for more information, visit www.kwalliance.org/cleanthecumberland , the Facebook event page http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=257452047617404 or call one of the contacts.

The event is also being hosted to raise public awareness about the importance of keeping trash out of the headwaters of the Cumberland – the birthplace of the river – and to celebrate the river’s importance.

“We used to call the river in Harlan County the Mighty Cumberland.  It was an important river – historically, geographically, ecologically and recreationally – but now it’s just a stream that’s barely noticed,” Forester said. “I won’t rest until I see the waterways here brought back to life again.”

After some hard work there will be a kayak giveaway, complimentary food and drinks, free water bottles, a Harlan County Waterways photo contest, a Waterways Quilt Block contest and live music by the Cumberland River bluegrass band.  With deep roots in Harlan County, the music of the Cumberland River band was recently showcased on the hit FX show, Justified, a series set in the city of Lexington, Kentucky and the mountains of Harlan.  The band is also celebrating their first national album release on Rural Rhythm Records (Nashville, TN).  For more information about  the Cumberland River band visit: http://www.cumberland-river.com/.

For more information about the cleanup or to find out how you can help sponsor or donate, please contact Cathryn Forester at (606) 573-9741 or Kelly Cook at (502) 589-8008.  To register for the event, e-mail kelly@kwalliance.org or RSPV on the cleanup’s Facebook page here: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=257452047617404.

Review – Parcbench – Cumberland River’s New CD Is Bluegrass At Its Best

Cumberland River’s New CD Is Bluegrass At Its Best

“What is it about bluegrass music that produces such talented musicians? Is it that the genre of music is so rewarding that it compels its participants to excel so? Is it that the genre is so malleable that it allows musicians to express themselves like no other? Whatever it is, when a bluegrass band is on track, it is the smoothest, most satisfying musical ride around.” By Greg Victor – Read the full review at PARCBENCH

Review – Radio Bluegrass International

“Cumberland River’s debut release is a winner. The Life We Live showcases traditional bluegrass filled with solid drive and Kentucky mountain soul. These boys know how to deliver a song and they deliver it right. Vocals are tight and musicianship is first rate. In short, Cumberland River does Kentucky proud. Their project displays not only a commitment to the high lonesome sound, but also their desire to provide an enjoyable listening experience. Highlights include “Harlan Man,” “Lonely Road,” “Train of Sorrow,” “This Life I Live,” and “Miner’s Prayer.” Highly recommended.”

Bob Mitchell, DJ – Radio Bluegrass International, WKWC-FM, and WFPK-FM (Former CD reviewer: Bluegrass Now, Louisville Music News, and Bluegrass Music Profiles)

CD REVIEW

CUMBERLAND RIVER
THE LIFE WE LIVE
As soon as I started to play this project, I was spellbound for the next 45 min.  Each & every song had a very special feel that kept you riveted to your cd player & wouldn’t let you go until the project ended.  The voices of the band members had that certain grit to it that gave the songs a special believability.  You could hear the heartache & sadness  as each song was sung.  These songs are so strong that I feel they could become classics some day.  The instrumental work by the band is “SUPERIOR “.  Kudos to Justin Moses for his fine dobro, & Dale Ann Bradley for her beautiful harmony vocals.  On a scale of 1 to 10 this is definitely a 10!!  This is a great sequel to their previous project.  I’m still playing requests for it!!
Thank you for sharing this fine project with us.

STEVE GULLEY shared some special behind the scenes tidbits about the band’s recent recording sessions including re-recording ‘Justified” that includes some cool boot stomping. That is just one of the many ways this new version exudes the rootsy power that is CUMBERLAND RIVER. Due to overwhelming fan requests and excitement for this new version, Rural Rhythm has gone ahead and made the song available now for digital purchase as a special pre-album promotion. The song is also available to RADIO via AirplayDirect.com.

The song actually came about as a result of an invitation to perform for the writers and producers of JUSTIFIED, while in Harland gathering information for the show.  With only 24 hours to spare before their performance, CUMBERLAND RIVER got together and composed “Justified” in a style that certainly fits the show.   Since that time, five additional songs from their 2010 self released album have been included on the Wednesday, April 6, 2011 episode that airs at 10:00 PM on the FX Network. With fans hearing six original songs performed by CUMBERLAND RIVER on JUSTIFIED that reaches an average of 7.2 million total viewers per week, certainly has music fans excited about their upcoming new album.

The band’s upcoming new project will include a collection of heart felt songs and haunting ballads written by the band and their family members taken from their life experiences and campfire stories from Harlan County. “We feel this is a dream come true for the band. We could never have imagined we would be on a major label working with some of the best bands in bluegrass, and working with such an awesome producer as STEVE GULLEY. We are truly humbled that Rural Rhythm is willing to take a chance on bunch of country boys from the mountains of Harlan, Kentucky” —CUMBERLAND RIVER.

Update on our songs featured on FX TV Show JUSTIFIED

As announced last month, the FX Network’s hit TV show, JUSTIFIED will include original songs by Kentucky bluegrass group, CUMBERLAND RIVER BAND.  Since that announcement, the show has added additional songs from the band that will be featured on the following episodes:

Episode 4 “For Blood or Money” airing Wednesday, March 2, 2011 will feature an instrumental version of the band’s original song, “Justified.” More info

Episode 9 “Brother’s Keeper” airing Wednesday, April 6, 2011 will feature four songs: “Ridge Runner,” “Wild Berries,” “My Dad,” and “Kentucky Mountain Home.” More info

JUSTIFIED is the brainchild of Producer GRAHAM YOST who has certainly welcomed the CUMBERLAND RIVER BAND into the fold saying,  “From the moment a bunch of us writers and producers heard the Cumberland River Band perform in Harlan, I thought we should somehow get them involved in the show.  Their music has all the dexterity and intricacy you expect from bluegrass, but it also has an emotional drive, an urgency, that I just knew would fit well with what we’re trying to do on JUSTIFIED.”

“This music has a beauty and a diversity all onto itself.  The Cumberland River Band works, because it becomes a character of the show, just like the actors, and the writers.  When music works, you feel it, it doesn’t disrupt, but creates a new magic.  It is the music of the Cumberland River Band and of this culture that makes it work so well with JUSTIFIED,” said Greg Sill, Music Supervisor.

Band members, JAMES DEAN, DUSTIN MIDDLETON, JAMIE STEWART and JOSEPH JONES co-wrote “Justified”; JAMES DEAN penned “Ridge Runner,” “Wild Berries,” and “My Dad”; and GERALD JONES composed “Kentucky Mountain Home.” All five songs can be heard on their debut album, ROCK ISLAND EXPRESS that was released last year.  They are currently in the studio with producer STEVE GULLEY recording their new album scheduled for release later this year.

THE NEW YORK DAILY NEWS calls JUSTIFIED “the best dramatic series on TV” with THE KANSAS CITY STAR saying “excellent…Emmy-worth portrayal by TIMOTHY OLYPHANT” as the main character Deputy U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens.  OLYPHANT can also be seen in the new sci-fi thriller I Am Number Four. New characters have joined the show this season including the addition of JEREMY DAVIES (who played Daniel Farady on LOST), along with MARGO MARTINDALE (Hannah Montana: The Movie, and numerous TV shows including MERCY and THE RICHES.)   JUSTIFIED’s second season kicked off earlier this month airing on WEDNESDAY nights on FX.  Please check your local listings and visit their official website for more information.

The CUMBERLAND RIVER BAND includes the talents of JAMES DEAN, JOEY JONES, JAMIE STEWART, DUSTIN MIDDLETON, ANDY BUCKNER, and GERALD JONES. For MEDIA & RADIO inquires for The Cumberland River Band, please contact Hope River Entertainment.

Our songs to be featured on upcoming episode of FX Network’s TV Show JUSTIFIED

The Cumberland River Band’s music is reflective of their deep roots in the Harlan County, Kentucky hills, so it was no surprise the producers of the FX Network’s TV show, JUSTIFIED tapped their original song, “Justified” for an upcoming show.   You can hear the band performing the tune when it is featured on “Season 2, Episode 4” airing soon.

Last July, The Cumberland River Band was invited to perform for the writers and producers of JUSTIFIED who were in Harlan gathering information for their upcoming season.  With only 24 hours notice, the band got together and wrote “Justified” as a gift to the show.  At their performance, they received a standing ovation from the writers and producers, including multi-award winning writer and producer, GRAHAM YOST.

Since that time, the show has added three more of the band’s original songs (“Ridge Runner”, “My Dad”, “Kentucky Mountain Home”) to the TV series.  All four songs can be heard on the band’s debut album, ROCK ISLAND EXPRESS released in September 2010.

FX’s JUSTIFIED is set in Harlan, Kentucky and was just named as one of the TOP 10 TV SHOWS of 2010 by USA TODAY.  The main character, Deputy U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens, is played by TIMOTHY OLYPHANT (A Perfect Getaway, Deadwood, Live Free or Die Hard) who returns to his hometown of Harlan after working in Miami, Florida.  JUSTIFIED’s website features music from past episodes including: BRAD PAISLEY’SYou’ll Never Leave Harlan Alive” written by DARRELL SCOTT; Brass Swamp Blues” by EVAN OLSON; and the show’s theme song, “Long Hard Times to Come,” a unique mix of bluegrass and rap performed by GANGSTAGRASS.

The Cumberland River Band is currently recording their second album. This new project is being produced by STEVE GULLEY (Grasstowne) and is scheduled for release later this year. It will include a collection of heart felt songs and haunting ballads written by the band and their family members taken from their life experiences and campfire stories from Harlan County, Kentucky. Important Band Announcements

crbyrhonda-cropped-sqCumberland River would like to announce Brad Gulley will be taking over bass duty along with lead and harmony vocals.  “I am really excited about moving over to bass. Bass guitar was the first instrument I learned how to play, and playing one again will be like coming home,” said Brad.

This move resulted in previous band member, Joey Jones leaving the band to work full time with his company.  James Dean on Joey’s departure, “It will be strange without Joey being there, this band started with just Joey and myself. I understand better than anyone how hard it is to juggle a job, family and a dream. We as a band wish him all the success with his new company.”

We are currently working with The Curve Studio for our new upcoming album which we are extremely excited about! We go back on the road Saturday, April 20th, appearing at the V-Club in Huntington, WV at 10 p.m
